Check out "Bohème 01 - Scala 1979 - Che gelida manina" - here he sings it in the original key. And you what? Puccini knew what he was doing. It is sweeter and more romantic. The lower key is ever som much more melancholy. It would be best to sing in the original key and leave out the high C, if the singer doesn't have it, and sing Puccini's written lower D. But this will never happen.

Both Caruso and Pavarotti took it down a half step and sing a high B at the end. Pavarotti sings it in the orig key in his recording with Karajan though, I believe.

that is born once in 100 years!!!

di Stefano blew out his voice while Pavarotti was able to sing for decades longer.

well he was in his 50's during this performance. check out the one from the 70's at La Scala, it's here on youtube |
