Sometime in the 1990s the human rights activist and WWII resistance leader Ginetta Sagan was honored at a nonpartisan Washington, D.C., event attended by various human rights supporters. Among the attendees was Joan Baez. I hadn't even noticed her in the crowd. Someone called on her to sing, and she performed an a capella version of "Gracias a la vida" for Mrs. Sagan. It was a true moment of grace.

my mum used to make me listen to joan baez when i was a kid, and i absolutely hated it (more of a monkees fan back then). but i do quite like her stuff now.

Still one of the most gorgeous, compelling voices in folk music. I was lucky enough to hear her live more than once, including her impromptu tribute to Ginetta Sagan at a Capitol Hill event some years back.
